Every year I paint a work especially for the Island Arts fund raiser on Hilton Head Island. The project provides art classes in our public and private schools:promisingartists.org. Other charities I help to fund are the Senior Center, United Way, the Women's Center and VIM, Volunteers in Medicine.

LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts

The Muse as a Catalyst for Creation features the work of local artists exploring their muses. We asked the artists do describe through their work their inspirations for creating what they do, using the muse as the main subject. Running concurrently in the Munroe House will be works from the Florida Senior Art Showcase, a juried exhibition featuring the work of regional Florida seniors. Featuring Diane Sams in the Hoover Gallery. Opening night is Friday, August 20 from 6-9 pm.

Daisies, Portrait from Life

I discovered Tasji at a music recital at FSU this winter. I saw her in profile a few seats away, and was struck by her poise. She assured me she had modeled before and would be happy to sit for me. I had one week to paint my entry for the Annual Portrait Society of America Competition, and desperately needed a model. Unable to reach Tasji by phone, I made a last attempt through email, and she responded. The painting was created from one session and another week working from photos. (See below)

Tasji is a violinist. I'm planning to feature her playing in our next session.

I like the solid rough feel of this portrait begun in Butterfield's Roadhouse during a performance by talented musician, Rick Edmiston . This is my first time painting ala prima in acrylic, since I typically sketch in watercolor. There are just a few details I want to perfect, like the size of the guitar, and catching highlights. I'm very wary of overworking this piece, thinking the looseness suits the musician. Check back next week to see how it is going. Gert

The joint was jumpin as one great jam followed another. Two harp players, a gaggle of guitars and Gabe keeping us all in line with his hot stix. A German family was clearly congratulating themselves on their fabulous find as Salli ushered them to a curtained love seat and rocking chair. When the upbeats brought the dancers to their feet, we shoved the art displays out of the way, clearing the worn planks to watch them glide, a couple of love birds. Sallie fed the crowd unforgettable goodies out of the kitchen. Things like French silk pie and sugar dusted cake. Putting my fork down, I let my brush is fly, painting it all down for prosperity. A tough gig!

Roadhouse Series New Release: Doing it in "D"

An uncharacteristic lull in the action demanded what to play next. One of the musicians asked: "Why don't we do in D? We've done it in G, we've done it in B, Let's do it in D". Chris in his favorite color purple (setting off the mums Salli had placed on the table, nicely) commenced, and by Goddess, they DID IT IN D!!

Lady with a Straw Hat

This is the portrait I completed with the Portrait Society of America last weekend. Although created in acrylic on rag board, it certainly has the flavor of watercolor. Instructor Ed Jonas commented that my thin wash approach is called painting the essence. I like that. The blue piece is my preparatory sketch. The finished work is acrylic on board 16 x 20.

Photo of the artist in costume (a flower head) with her painting: "These Boots Were Made for Walking" a fictional piece that suggests a story. I haven't deciphered the plot yet. Suggestions? At the time of painting I considered things scary for it would be featured at a Halloween masquerade ball. White vinyl mini skirts and boots came immediately to mind I realized there are things about women's fashion that in retrospect ARE scary! I was a teenager in a Chicago winter when these were the rage, and yes, I succumbed to them, and I suffered! See for yourself at Frog & Hummingbird Company where the "Boots" are currently walking.

After adding tone to the background and cooling the mansion behind the scene, I added a painting of the grooms mother, refined the figures, flowers and highlights. The painting is nearing completion. I want to define the guardsmen a little. Now I need to decide whether to crop the finished work to a horizontal (landscape) or portrait format. Think I will ask the groom's mother, Nancy what do you think?

In the 1980s I satisfied my science credit requirements by illustrating Rogue Valley wild flowers, as well as entomological studies of butterflies. Two decades later I received a solicitation to compete in a call for entries for a horticultural group in my part time home in Tallahassee. After rendering a nicely washed Magnolia blossom, I scanned into Gimp where I could add the requisite text. This is the result I submitted this morning.

North Florida Rain

The sky is darkening as I ready for the inevitable afternoon showers that come almost daily to North Florida where I have a spacious studio on a cypress swamp. This is where I produce most of my paintings of late. I was up until 4:00 this morning thinking I would use up the paint on my palette and created "Painter in Red" and "Water's Edge" (seen below), left over from the large portrait I'm working on. It is amazing how time is suspended when we are engaged in creating.

Myrtle Blossums Original Oil on Paper

I sketched this scene in watercolor one day in the charming town of Beaufort, South Carolina. Myrtle trees have beautiful limbs that grow together over time. When the tiny petals fall, they look like pink snow. I finished the work in oil on heavy rag paper and left the natural edge (called "deckled") of the handmade paper. 5 x 7. $69.00

I had forgotten all about this portrait I did of Nancy until I stumbled over it on Beiman's facebook page. I love this painting, a watercolor sketch from life. Nancy wore a necklace of rubber chickens around her neck for this pose, which I covet to this day. Nancy is a marvelous animator, currently passing her craft on to lucky students at Sheridan Tech , Ontario, Canada. I added background elements to this tiny masterpiece. I like the way the black frame weights the composition, picking up details in the pears. I also added more texture to the wall, and folds of fabric. The thin blue line on the frame tells us this is a mirror and makes the pears pop. A lot of info is packed in this 5 x 7 inches. I love this painting and found it hard to give up. Fortunately, it went to a local patron and I'll be able to see it again. Thank you Susan!

This began as a watercolor sketched on site while visiting my dear friend Shirley Smith. I walked across the waterfront, past Hepburn' s place and reveled in the fabulous air before stumbling on this wonderful scene. The rocks on the sound are large and rounded and all the colors.

This week I'm digging up my old WC sketches, sealing them and finishing them in oil. This is the first in the series.

Vermeer's Peer (study)

The first painting of my Master Series as I practice the time tested approach used by the masters themselves: learning from the luminaries, in this case Vermeer. I am currently focusing my studies on portraiture and so turn to this artist for his genius in capturing light as it falls on the figure from a single natural source.
Each brushstroke is my own, painted by observation and without preliminary sketch or assistance. The traditional colors are true to the mid 1600's and will be gorgeous in traditional or contemporary decor.

One thing I notice is that many of us in the "aht world" have some very poor business acumen. Whether you manage a gallery, organize shows, or sell your own work, common sense tells you that when you have an inquiry - respond!! In the last two months I have applied to a local gallery which included resume, application, emails, and a second visit to the physical site...in short, a lot of time and sincerity on my part...
and a Fall festival show, which included a check, application, CD with digital pics, etc.: a little bit of time and money on my part.

To date: not one word of response. Now I know some of you are going to tell me, no one does that anymore, to which I say, we gotta change this.

Les get real, this is a biz.
